Disadvantage,
Discrimination, Detention -
the Responsibilities of the States
9
November 1997
International DayAgainst Fascism and
Anti-Semitism
"Kristallnacht" commemorations in 22 countries!
Around
9 November 1997, 59 years after the "Kristallnacht"
pogroms in Nazi-Germany, thousands have taken part in mass demonstrations,
commemorations and other activities. The common international
theme "Disadvantage, discrimination, detention - The responsibilities
of the states" has been chosen by the participating organisations.
Referring to the United Nations "International Convention
on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination"
that has been signed by all important European countries, they
have challenged the governments to show that they take their
responsibilities seriously.
Neo-nazis
organised demonstrations to celebrate the "Kristallnacht"
as a happy anniversary in München (D), Hønefoss (N)
and Stockholm (S). 70 neo-nazis gathered in Rotterdam (NL) on
the eve of 9 November to commemorate the failed coup of Hitler
in 1923. Peaceful demonstrations of anti-fascists were attacked
in Linköping and Zabrze by neo-nazis, while the police stood
by and watched. In Asker (N) the town was sprayed with slogans
such as "White Power". Anti-fascists will resist the
fascists taking over the streets, especially on this date. These
events show that there is a need to commemorate this day, so
that it will continue to be seen as the tragic beginning of the
Holocaust. This is not the first time that neo-nazis try to disrupt
the commemoration activities. In 1995 vandals attacked a Jewish
cemetery in Sweden on this date, while in Norway neo-nazis bombed
the autonomist "Blitz" centre in Oslo (N).
All
over Europe hundreds of commemoration and protest activities
have been organised on November 9 1997, International Day Against
Fascism and Antisemitism. The biggest demonstration took place
in Yugoslavia. Between 1.000 and 3.000 people marched in the
streets of Belgrade to protest against the on-going violence
against Roma in their country. In Essen 1.000 anti-fascists
marched in protest against fascist violence. In the Netherlands
activities took place in 11 cities all over the country in many
different ways, but mainly comparing the situation of refugees
in 1938 and in 1997.
9
November 1938 was the date of the "Kristallnacht" pogrom
in Nazi Germany. Three days earlier, on November 6th, a Jew,
Herschel Grynszpan, who was angry at the increasingly repressive
measures being adopted in Germany against Jews took revenge by
shooting the diplomat Ernst vom Rath at the German embassy in
Paris. The diplomat died two days later and news of his death
reached Germany on 9 November. This started a massive nationwide
pogrom, secretly organised by a section of the Nazi party, which
left many Jews dead in the streets, and hundreds of Jewish businesses
and synagogues burnt, smashed and destroyed. It marked the beginning
of the Holocaust. This year's commemorations ask European governments
to take their responsibilities where fascism, antisemitism and
other forms of intolerance are concerned. Neglecting those responsibilities
can have dangerous and even fatal consequences.
UNITED
for Intercultural Action has distributed 20.000 stickers and
5.000 information leaflets explaning the history of "Kristallnacht",
the purpose of the commemorations and giving examples of racist
practices in Europe. The secretariat has sent out several press
releases and numerous lists of activities. International journalists
have been referred to specific organisations for more in depth
information. The information has been spread widely through the
Internet as well.
This
report shows only a small selection of the events that took place,
compiled from reports, press cuttings, photographs, posters and
leaflets sent to the UNITED secretariat by the participating
organisations. Please not that the accompanying texts refer only
to those reports. Of course, many other actions took place in
those and other countries too. Unfortunately we are not able
to report on those.

CZECHIA
In
Czechia a "Week in Promotion of Tolerance" took place
just after the "Kristallnacht" commemorations. Although
the week took place from 17 November until 23 November, activities
lasted from 9 November until 10 December (International Human
Rights Day) and included 17 November, the commemoration of the
Velvet Revolution and the end of communist rule in Czechia. This
awareness raising campaign was organised by DUHA/Rainbow Association,
OPU, UNHCR, Nadace Nová Skola and others. It included
(among other things) an essay writing contest, a public seminar
and a film festival.
CROATIA
The
International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism was the occasion
of a wide cooperation of human rights and anti-racist groups
in Croatia. The Group for Direct Protection of Human Rights,
"Children First", the Jewish Community, Roma associations
and Arkzin magazine organised a Day of Action, supported by another
fifteen organisations in Zagreb and surroundings. With the slogan
"Equal opportunities for all - obligation of each state
and society" they organised a painting workshop for children
with the title "I am part of the world too", they removed
garbage from an anti-fascist monument and went to the former
concentration camp of Loborgrad to commemorate the victims of
fascism during the Second World War. They published a public
statement about the new law in Croatia, which no longer prohibits
hate speech. Commemorations took place in Osijek as well, where
flowers were placed on the spot where an anti-fascist monument
used to stand, before it was destroyed.
FINLAND
In
Turku the commemoration of "Kristallnacht" was linked
to a reflection on everyday anti-racist practices. Multicultural
Information Association, Voix Sans Frontières, Migrant
Project and International Meeting Point took the occasion to
discuss "Ethnic representation in the Finnish Media".
In Vaasa the commemoration was combined with an open doors day
with information on refugees and Fortress Europe by Antifa Pohjanmaa.
GERMANY
In
Germany, 9 November has become a strange mixture of celebration
and commemoration. On 8 November the unsuccessful coup-attempt
by Hitler in 1923 is commemorated by Nazis, On 9 November the
Berlin Wall fell. But many remember that 9 November was also
the day on which hundreds of synagogues were burnt and smashed,
when Jews were molested and killed in 1938. Many commemorations
took place, all over Germany with titles such as "Against
Forgetting" and "Learning from History: For a Future
Without Racism, Fascism and War". A meeting and demonstration
of 250 people took place in Erfurt with the title "A Parliament
Against the Right Wing" and in Trier an international meeting
tried to explore the different solutions to racism in different
countries. Demonstrations took place in Essen (1000 participants),
Aachen (150 participants) and Gollwitz. Unfortunately at the
same time Nazis paraded in the street and the European Holocaust
Memorial Site was smeared with yellow paint in Landsberg am Lech.
ITALY
Anti-racist
material, anti-racist graffiti, anti-racists posters... CISP,
in cooperation with many other organisations in Italy organised
an Anti-Racism Week from 8 until 14 November in which all, children
and adults, could find activities to their liking. The Week took
place in the framework of the European Year Against Racism and
gave also a special place to the commemoration of "Kristallnacht".
LATVIA
On
the eve of 9 November several major newspapers in Latvia ran
an announcement on the commemoration of "Kristallnacht"
and the International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism. It
mentioned the serious problems of minorities in the country.
The Latvian Human Rights Committee not only published these texts,
they also organised a commemoration at the site of the synagogue
that was burnt down by the Nazis. Many newspapers reported about
it and contrasted it to the recent events commemorating the establishment
of the Latvian SS Legion.
MOLDOVA
For
the first time the Helsinki Citizen's Assembly, the Helsinki
Committee for Human Rights and the Anti-fascist Committee of
Moldova organised a round table together in the framework of
the International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism. Many
minorities organisations took part in the event. The main results
were several demands on the government, such as the introduction
of the history of the Holocaust in school books where it is still
totally absent and the implementation of existing laws against
fascist propaganda. It was also decided to continue to organise
special anti-fascist events on November 9 every year.
NETHERLANDS
In
the Netherlands more than 11 different commemorations took place
all over the country. Most activities concentrated on the treatment
of asylum-seekers and refugees in the Netherlands today and in
1938. Anti-fascists were heavily criticised in some newspapers
for comparing the refugee deportation camp in Ter Apel with the
refugee camp Westerbork, which was used before the Second World
War to detain Jewish refugees from Germany and later by the Nazi
occupation to deport people to the extermination camps. Special
attention was also given to the extreme right in the Netherlands.
On the eve of 9 November around 70 neo-nazis came together in
Rotterdam to commemorate the failed coup of Hitler in 1923. Activities
around the commemoration of "Kristallnacht" were also
linked to a celebration of diversity with music, poems and debates
aimed especially at young people. Activities were coordinated
by Nederland Bekent Kleur.
POLAND
Activities
in Poland started already on 31 October with a special evening
of anti-nazi poetry. On 6, 8 and 9 November there were anti-fascist
demonstrations in Zabrze, Katowice and Bydgoszcz. The demonstration
in Zabrze was attacked by a gang of neo-nazis. As part of the
"Kristallnacht" commemorations a special compilation
record was released in November by 'Never Again' Association
under the title "Music Against Racism". On 9 November
a wreath was laid on the monument for the heros of the Warsaw
ghetto uprising. And on the same date a meeting was held in Szczecin,
organised by 'Never Again', the Anti-Nazi Group and the Jewish
Social-Cultural Association. In total more than a dozen groups
organised activities.
ROMANIA
Activities
in Romania took place in Cluj-Napoca, in Galati and in Bucharest
by Youth Action for Peace Romania, ASLIR, Sibieni Pacifisti and
OSDJ-Galati. A special questionnaire was distributed in schools
in Cluj, to find out the knowledge and opinion of young people.
At the same time information leaflets were distributed widely.
In Galati the post office agreed to stamp all post around 9 November
with the campaign logo. In the same town a film festival was
organised during which the public could see films on minority
issues for free. Several public debates took place. In Bucharest
visits to the Jewish History Museum and the Jewish Community
were followed by presentations and discussions on the Holocaust
and "Kristallnacht".
SWEDEN
The
commemorations in Sweden were tainted by the nazi demonstrations
in Stockholm the night before and by the attack of a group of
neo-nazis on the anti-racist demonstration in Linköping.
During counter demonstrations in Stockholm of anti-racists the
police protected the neo-nazis. In Linköping they stood
by and did not stop the attack. On 15 and 30 November protests
were organised by the Network Against Racism (60 anti-racist
NGOs) against fascist violence and police violence/passivity.
The International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism was linked
partly to the creation of a Fortress Europe, by means of the
Schengen agreement. In Helsingborg 9 November was the occasion
of a full day of action against fascism, including an exhibition,
a conference and a torch light demonstration, organised by Ungdom
mod Våld och Rasism and others.
YUGOSLAVIA
Between
1.000 and 3.000 people demonstrated in Belgrade in observance
of the International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism. They
drew attention to the murder of Dusan Jovanovich, a 14-year-old
Roma boy who was recently killed by racist skinheads. The Jewish
community organisations cooperated with the Roma organisations
and with several other NGOs. They decided that 9 November should
also be a day against Anti-ziganism (or 'hatred of Roma'). The
Group of Irresponsible Citizens organised another demonstration
with posters and slogans which had been produced with the local
youth group "Creative Workshop".

International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism we commemorate
"Kristallnacht" and renew our commitment to struggle
against all forms of intolerance.
