"International Refugee Day 2005"
On 4th of December 2000 the General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously adopted a resolution to proclaim 20th of June as the World Refugee Day. Around this date activities in support of refugees will take place all over Europe.
Demonstrations, conferences, festivals and exhibitions will be organised.
Since several years UNITED has co-ordinated an international refugee campaign, which consists of two complimentary parts:
- Promoting a save environment for refugees and asylum seekers where they do not have to fear racism and intolerance.
- Protesting against the restrictive asylum policies, that are often referred to as "Fortress Europe": especially focusing attention on the deaths of more than 5000 people since 1993 who tried to find a save haven in Europe.
UNITED calls upon organisations to contribute to this awareness raising campaign. Keep the secretariat informed about your activities. A list of activities will be published and regularly updated on the UNITED site www.unitedagainstracism.org
