 Raise Your Voice Against Racism
13-21 March 1999
European -wide Action week Against Racism

RAISE YOUR VOICE AGAINST RACISM!
Racism is not a local issue. Equal rights is an international demand. European campaigns can help set the agenda on all levels. By linking local and national actions throughout the countries of Europe, we can generate European-wide publicity. We can show that there is an enormous amount of people that believe in an intercultural open society.

March 21st was declared International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by the General Assembly of the United Nations as a reaction to the murder of 69 demonstrators in Sharpeville, South Africa in 1960. This year once again hundreds of activities will take place all around Europe, organised by a wide variety of organisations. Activities range from demonstrations to film festivals and from special TV programs to cleaning the walls of racist slogans.

UNITED will start the week with the launch of the newest version of the list of deaths of refugees caused by "Fortress Europe" together with CARF (Campaign Against Racism and Fascism) that will launch its annual overview of deaths that can be attributed to racism in general in Europe

At the end of the week on March 21st, a Europe Wide Anti-Racist Radio Broadcast of local radio stations all over Europe will pay attention to the Action Week with a special 24 hours radio program against racism "Voices Without Frontiers". This special broadcast, in co-operation with AMARC, can also be received on the internet (http://www.amarc.org/vsf/) and by satellite

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Raise your voice against racism!
Participants at the UNITED conference in Ireland proposed an easy action that is just the opposite of the 'commemorative minutes of silence': one minute of noise. Many migrants and refugees do not have a political voice, but we can let them be heard in the streets!

Publish your annual report during the Action Week!
Annual reports provide the outside world with an idea of what our greatest concerns were and what we did about them in the past year. In Vienna, during a UNITED conference, participants decided to concentrate the publication of annual activity reports of their organisations around the Action Week. Your reports should be sent to UNITED well before the Action Week. A short overview of racism and anti-racism in Europe in the past year will then be produced.
